President Trump said in an early morning tweet on Thursday that his vision of a border wall has “never changed or evolved," pushing back on a top aide's comments.

“The Wall is the Wall, it has never changed or evolved from the first day I conceived of it,” Trump said.

“Parts will be, of necessity, see through and it was never intended to be built in areas where there is natural protection such as mountains, wastelands or tough rivers or water,” he added.

Trump in a subsequent tweet said Mexico would “directly or indirectly” pay for the wall and ripped the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

“The Wall will be paid for, directly or indirectly, or through longer term reimbursement, by Mexico, which has a ridiculous $71 billion dollar trade surplus with the U.S. The $20 billion dollar Wall is “peanuts” compared to what Mexico makes from the U.S. NAFTA is a bad joke!”

The tweets come after The Washington Post late Wednesday reported that White House chief of staff John Kelly said during a meeting with Democratic lawmakers that some of Trump’s campaign promises on immigration, including the wall, are “uninformed.”

The newspaper added that Kelly told lawmakers there will be no wall on the border “that Mexico will pay for.”

"[Trump's] changed his attitude toward the DACA issue and even the wall," Kelly then said during an appearance Wednesday evening on Fox News, referring to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. Trump last year announced he was ending the Obama-era program, which shields immigrants brought to the U.S. illegally as children from deportation, but gave lawmakers time to come up with a legislative fix.

"[Trump] has evolved in the way he's looked at things,” Kelly said. “Campaigns and governing are two different things."
